Characters have two hit point pools, stamina and health. Health instead represents their physical wellness.
Stamina
Stamina represents an active defense from the character, their ability to avoid, deflect or stop attacks.
Stamina is associated with a Recovery Die, which certain actions can invoke.
That is to say that your pool of Stamina is equal to your Recovery Die’s size. You can gain Extra Stamina equal to the size of your Stamina Pool. Meaning your Maximum stamina is equal to twice the value of your Stamina Pool

Gates
Whenever a character’s stamina is exhausted, the damage they are taking is “gated”. This means that any left over damage will not be carried over to the health. Depending on a character’s Power Features characters might have other gates, which limit damage in the same way. Additionally “Triggering a Gate” might be also be the requirement for reactions or combo actions.
Tank Or Flank?
Take Or Evade? Resist or Desist? When a characterPH is about to be afflicted by a negative effect they must make a save. The character can chose to Tank the hit, they don’t take the effect but take 1 damage to their health. Alternatively they can attempt to Flank the hit, rolling a D20 against the DC and adding their current stamina to the roll. On a success they don’t take the effect on a failure they do
However if a character’s current stamina is Exhausted they can’t Flank a hit, leaving them with a choice of either taking 1 damage or the effect.
